Vanilla is Sur Ron in South Africa

I’m writing here to update everyone in SA about the Sur Ron Light Bees imported by Vanilla.  I know at least some of you by now know a few things about the Sur Ron:
  • It’s the biggest selling bike in the world (yes, not only selling more than other ebikes, they are selling more of these than any other mainstream motorcycle)Everyone is waiting for one (some of those who were prepared to let go, have sold them for a premium)

The Internet DB Board

After years of internet installations in homes and business we are coming up with something that we think will help everyone. The Internet DB board is a place to go when the internet is not working properly. The lights and indicators should be easy to find and visible. We think this will reduce the number of calls and time to resolve faults.

Although we have been installing home connections for 20 years, in the past 4 years we moved to installing smart access points all around the property. These are fixtures so should be provided by the same funds that pay for electrical and plumbing installs. They also add value to the property when done well.

After extensive testing we found Ubiquiti ac lites to perform the best (but with a Mikrotik RB750GR3 router). Because these need many power plugs and a power strip as well as POE injectors, there is a heap of cabling and bulky power bricks and plugs and cords.

The Vanilla Community

During the past six months we have become closer to our customers. Most businesses have gone home, some went back and we’ve gone into homes and offices and helped in both. We want to make sure your internet works well, and we cater for discerning clients.  In the past few months of lockdown we have tried to better understand ourselves, the way we work and the levels of personalisation that we add.

We don’t advertise, we help customers one at a time, and they refer others. We don’t accept poor service from our suppliers. We try to make things work well for everyone, we go to those in our sweet spot, and we do work remotely. We monitor our services all the time. We also test products, because we have to make the internet work everywhere. And we are discerning. We also like cool things that work well.

Covid-19 in Cape Town

At Vanilla we’re mainly concerned about our city. We don’t get much information at the moment, so we’ve been following the trends. This daily updated graph maybe helpful. (note: If you put your mouse over the interactive graph below you will see the daily reports). More explained below:

Uncapped gigabit Internet

At Vanilla we used to consider the word “uncapped” to be a swear word – since it’s an anomoly – there is truly no such thing as uncapped or unlimited, mainly because time is finite and unlimited tends towards infinity. We urge customers to avoid comparing ‘uncapped’ offerings since it is virtually impossible to tell what you are getting without ‘trying’ and certainly not possible to compare based only on advertised pricing. Even in the USA, home users “have to start counting their gigabytes

“Smart TV” OR Xiaomi Mi Box S media player

We’ve been helping ourselves and customers make better use of their “smart” TVs. there have been so many changes over the past three years we need to share some of what we’ve learned.

  1. TV’s that were first released before 2016 usually cannot do what is needed on their own. After trying every media player available to us we struggled to find a user friendly device. A simple remote and system that connects easily and plays movies.
  2. Many customers have complained about the AppleTV device which is often underpowered for real HD streaming and all the services

Net Flieks

Netflix, Netflix, Netflix. Netflix-Original, “Let’s check Netflix!”, “Netflix and chill?”, “Do you have Netflix?”

Short of living on the moon for the last decade, it is almost impossible to not have heard of movie and TV series streaming giant Netflix – which has recently taken over from the traditional TV networks – most of the home viewing market.

The company started with modest beginnings, as a DVD rental company and slowly began to move towards online streaming as its main focus. It experienced an enormous amount of growth and is now currently the 10th most successful company on the planet, falling just behind eBay (but 2 spots above Uber…)

An interesting month for the internet

From rising water levels worldwide, to new laws and regulations as well as nation wide internet shut downs, the ever-shifting internet has been busy over the last 30 days, so let’s get stuck in and find out whats going on!

Not as much time as we’d thought…
Besides the many environmental difficulties that have come with rising sea levels (like saying goodbye to Venice), the rise is putting the internet under threat. Thousands of kilometers of underground fibre-optic cables have been deemed to be under threat in many cities in the US, New York, Seattle and Miami to name a few. Interestingly, scientists have been aware of this issue for a while now and had set themselves a goal of about 50 years to find a fix, but in reality, recent investigations show they have more like 15 years. The first of the damage is predicted to be the speed of internet connections themselves, which will then lead to further deterioration over time.

“Look Ma, I got 1 million views!”

Technology is pushing society onwards and upwards as we create, develop and upgrade the world around us and, as expected, this push has opened up a whole new field of careers which never existed several decades ago. One of these professions which to many is still quite misunderstood, is internet personalities.
